Grantland : 2011-2015

Feeling nostalgic already towards the loss of Grantland, unceremoniously shuttered the other day with just a brief statement from the ESPN (Disney) network;

“We have decided to direct our time and energy going forward to projects that we believe will have a broader and more significant impact.”

The site, which started life as the pet project of former ESPN star personality Bill Simmons, apparently served no further purpose after the acrimonious exit of Simmons back in early May… which is a shame, so much great writing produced by the Grantland stable of writers in what has now become a 4-year moment in time… I was just the other day enjoying this article on the A’s big 3 while pondering which way the Cubs might go in addressing their own pitching concerns.

But in the end, I’m guessing that Simmons was the sort of polarizing personality that made flushing a 20 million dollar investment down the crapper a more viable option than allowing the site to live on. The fact that the property wasn’t offered up for sale on the open market just another indicator that some degree of spite may have been at play.

So c’est la vie Grantland, it was fun while it lasted.
